On April 12, 1988, the United States Patent and Trademark Office granted U.S. Patent No. 4,736,866 to Philip Leder and Timothy A. Stewart for "a transgenic non-human mammal whose germ cells and somatic cells contain a re-combinant activated oncogene sequence introduced into said mammal." Having inspired fierce legal battles in Canada and the European Union, the Oncomouse symbolizes many of the hopes and anxieties that law can address only by resort to science.
