A thought -- and an image -- for September 12

Anyone who has survived tragedy understands that the hardest and most important moment comes the next day. Standing tall takes superhuman effort. I propose that we think of September 12 as a day of national -- no, global -- resolve to stand tall.

If only for today, the bald eagle should step aside in favor of the phoenix. This painting by Norwegian artist Sonja Alsli expresses through color, light, and visual power a sense of hope that words alone cannot convey. I offer it to you today, September 12, 2006.
